If you own a car or regularly drive someone else’s car – you have to make sure that it is insured!
MCL 500.3101 – This is the law in MI that requires you to have insurance on car that you either own or which is registered to you.
If you own and drive a car that does not have auto insurance you cannot have any of your medical bills paid for or sue for your injuries that you suffered in a car accident that was not your fault – EVEN IF a drunk driver runs a red light and hits you, if you don’t have the required auto insurance on your car you can’t recover any money!
This law also applies to motorcycles; you must have auto insurance!
IF YOU MOVE TO MICHIGAN OR ARE JUST VISTING FROM ANOTHER STATE AND YOU OPERATE YOUR VEHICLE HERE FOR MORE THAN 30 DAYS:
Your insurance company is supposed to provide you with 2 copies of your certificate of insurance.
One of these copies is supposed to be filed with the MI Secretary of State.
MAKE SURE to keep a copy of your Proof of Insurance in your vehicle to be ready to present to any Michigan Police Officer upon request.
